AZ 900 Certification - Prep Guide

Before you proceed, I am assuming you are AZ 900 Certification aspirants.

Most of you know I am in IT and work for Microsoft.  With my previous employer, I was in IT operations, supporting the Artificial Intelligence and Analytics Department although, I was thorough with the skillset names Informatica, MSBI, Azure data bricks, AWS, and GCP…. I was not familiar with the cloud concepts.  Yes worked in standalone, LAN, and WAN. Moved to IT operations, for the past 17 years. Was very eager to know more about the buzzword ‘Cloud’ and its concepts. Was a curious Georgy always… As per Einstein “I have no special talents but I am only passionately curious”

During my orientation session at Microsoft in Dec 2021, they mentioned that as a full-time employee, I could take any of the Microsoft Certifications for free. I can take a maximum of 5 attempts in a year for free, per Certification.

Yes, I am not only keen but an ardent learner, put this pointer on my back burner and was focusing on my ramp-up with my new employer…. Although on the back burner, it was always warm… I was thinking - What certifications can I pursue? After a couple of months, spoke to my manager about this… But he said that there is a lot of work coming my way – and certifications may not be needed.

But within 6 months, there was a major reorg, and I also had a change of manager…. With the re-org there was a lot of work, hence could not focus on certification. But remember my 1-year clock for certification is already ticking… Mid of Nov, had my performance appraisal with my new manager. This certification vigor in me was so intense, that in the spur of a moment, I told my manager I would do my AZ 900 certification within EOY 2022.

It is a holiday time – all of us know, come Mid-Nov to Jan first week it is always a fun time with Family and Friends. However, my determination to do the certification was strong. I spoke to my friends in my network and heard they had this certification under their belt a long time back. I felt – I was left behind. Got some vague tips here and there from them and started my hard work. There is a saying.

If you are not willing to learn, no one can help you. If you are determined to learn no one can stop you.

People who know me or worked with me know that, I am a very committed person - So I did all my research - online, and found the required videos on YouTube, blogs, and various other materials. I did not want my friends to go all over the place to find out about this AZ Certification.

We are drowning in information but starved for knowledge. Hence thought of sharing the details.

Azure Roadmap

It is the entry-level cloud certification for Microsoft Azure – meant for learning the cloud for the first time. It is the great first step towards other Certifications. Let me share the roadmap.

The Azure Roadmap: If you want to know what to do after this certification. Azure breaks up their certification Role-based.

Fundamental - AZ 900

Associate - Administrator, Developer, AI Engineer, Data Scientist, Data Engineer, Security

Expert - Solution Architect, DevOps Engineer

Specialty - Azure for SAP Workloads, IoT Developer

Preparation

Commonly for Sales and Management to help inform and sell to VPs and CEOS reasons for their company to utilize Microsoft Azure.

Popular among developers to show that have familiar knowledge of cloud concepts.

What value does the AZ 900 hold - If you are a developer, it is not going to be that useful on your resume, you need to move on to the associate or expert track. But that does not mean you should not get this one. If you are a developer and you already have cloud knowledge and another cloud provider like AWS /GCP you already have an associate level. You just want to show you can work across the cloud grabbing this AZ 900 certification. Just to get the transferable knowledge.

The main reason to take this AZ 900 is because it helps to build confidence.

How much time do I need to put in?

If you are a developer. – Say junior to a mid-developer and you have been working in the industry for a few years - but you do not have cloud experience – you must spend 10 to 12 hours of study.

If you are a boot camp grad – without any real-world industry experience, but you want to take on AZ900 to help your resume stand out, you need to spend 20 to 25 hours.

If you are in Sales or management - and do not have the technical background but are trying to understand why you should adopt Azure or the cloud for your business you are looking for 35

to 40 hours to study.

The way I recommend is to put in 1 to 3 hours a day, all seven days a week. Yes, I mean every

single day. Do NOT spread this. Yes, just start, prep, and finish.

I just told my manager in my year-end appraisal somewhere in Mid-November, that I will complete it before the end of the year and Boom, I just completed it on Dec 7th.

If you want something you never had - you must do something you have never done before.

Exam center - In Person and Remote.

Where do you take the AZ900 exams?

The way this works with most cloud service providers is they are partnered with a company that is also partnered with a bunch of test centers around the world and Azure is partnered with ‘Pearson VUE’. The great thing about ‘Pearson Vue’ is that you can either go in person to a test center - use the Pearson Website and tell you the Test centers nearby or you can take it from the convenience of your own home. Yes, with a Pandemic, it got evolved. You have a web camera and have a very sparse room so that you do not have a bunch of things in the background, and they can trust that you are in a secure location - like your home office. It is called the proctored exam. You take the test under the supervision of a proctor – who monitors you through the web camera. I took the exam from home, and it was very convenient.

Tips and Grades to Pass

What does it take to pass the exam?

At the beginning of the exam, there is a survey asking about your proficiency in Azure.

o   new

o   used for 3 to 6 months

o   used for a couple of years.

I believe based on this the severity of the question will be. So better to choose ‘New’, which I

did. This is a secret, no one told me about it, nor any videos or sites.

To pass the exam, you have to score 700 out of 1000. Yes, 70% is the passing score.

  1. Memorize the key information.
  2. If your career is in the Developer /Architect route - do take the hands-on lab sessions and follow along with your own Azure Free Account.

3.    Do a lot of Practice tests that simulate the real exam

Exam Duration

60 mins is the exam time

90 mins is the seat time - this refers to the amount of time you should allocate for the exam

It includes

o   time to review instructions

o   Read and accept the NDA

o   Complete the exams

o   Provide feedback at the end of the exam - which is optional

Exam Fees - It will cost you $99 in the USA.

Certification Validity. This certification that you receive will be valid for 2 years. You

can hold to this for 24 months before you must get recertified,

Also, I recommend taking the free online set of learning provided by Microsoft.

Exam Retake Policy

  • If you do not pass an exam the first time, you must wait 24 hours before retaking it.
  • A 14-day waiting period is imposed between all subsequent attempts (up to 5).
  • You may not take a given exam more than five (5) times within 12 months from the first attempt. If you fail the exam 5 times, you’ll be eligible to retake it 12 months from the date of your first attempt.
  • If you passed your Certification is valid for 2 years. You cannot retake an exam you have passed unless your certification has expired.
  • You must pay to retake the exam (if applicable.)

Being Ops – what advantage is it for me?

Cloud computing is a buzz/hype word in the IT world today.

There are 5 characteristics of Cloud Computing

 1)   On-Demand Self-Service -  This allows the user to quickly and automatically get access to the IT resources without any other human interactions.

2)    2) Broad network access -  This is the ability to access the service from any standard device, connected to the network -  like PC, laptop, mobile phone, Tablets.

3)    3)Resource Pooling -  Compute, networking, and storage are pooled and shared across multiple customers

4)    4)Rapid Elasticity -  This  allows you  to  quickly  scale up  or shrink the capability  of  your  cloud, to  match  the level  of the user demand

5)    5)Metering - This tracks and controls the level  of usage or the cost  of the usage

Microsoft Azure offers services such as virtual machine instances, storage, and messaging, as well as additional services such as machine learning and AI tools., Microsoft charges customers based on their usage of these services, as well as any additional features or support they subscribe to. Customers can choose from a variety of subscription plans based on their needs, and can even save money by committing to long-term usage.

Want to learn more about the Azure consumption – ACR – Azure Consumed Revenue and MACC = Microsoft Azure Consumed Commit.  There are various contractual commitments – the customer makes with Microsoft for a specific amount and time frame.

Done a lot of Financial calculations with FTE, Subcons, Vendor, Revenue, Cost, and profit. Just want to explore the Financial aspects $$ in the cloud computing arena on the intangible or conceptual. These include  Servers, storage, networking, databases, and applications over the internet.

I want to  share 2 important pointers

1)    Although I work at Microsoft, I am not a formal/official spokesperson to publicize this AZ 900 certification

2)    If you want to do any certification, do not wait for a green signal from your manager. If you have mentors/well-wishers, pls check with them, and then your manager. We do not know the managers' intentions.

If this is your first Azure certification it can be a bit intimidating and difficult to dial in your focus as you prepare. So, if you want to get ready for AZ900 without wasting time and money contact me anytime.

Everything is possible – you just must make it a Priority.

          Good Luck!

Nava Rasa - India trip Summer 2023.

People familiar with Indian art and culture will know Nava rasa.  Navarasa means nine emotions; rasa means an emotional state of mind.

Will use Nava Rasa as my framework, to elaborate on my recent vacation to  India.

The first rasa is Shringara, which is often translated as "love" or "romance." It is used to convey feelings of intimacy, passion, and desire. Going on vacation, it brings our family together. At home in the US, we are distributed across 4000 sq ft home. But on vacation, we find our family members just within our reach. No calling /texting on the phone, just addressing their name, will find them next to you. The kids rarely sit with us here, but when on vacation, they fight or take turns to sit or lie down next to us… It is a feeling of bonding. Love it.

Another community view that gave me a surprising shock, was the number of women coming out of their houses to work and build their careers to support their families. I am just comparing India now and 15/20 years back. Found women working in every role - Restaurants, Gas stations, supermarkets.. everywhere. I saw more women on two-wheelers, either to work or take their kids to after-school activities. Love the woman empowerment increasing in Chennai.

The second rasa is Hasya, which means "laughter" or "humor." It is used to convey a sense of joy, playfulness, and lightheartedness.

My daughter had a lot of fun feeding the stray dogs on the street. She will stand from the 2nd-floor balcony and feed them. Also, with several crows playing ‘Catch it’ – she threw a piece of food/snack, and the crows will catch and eat them. They are not afraid of humans.

Another serious issue but made me laugh. My Co-sister, when traveling in their car as a passenger, does not like to wear a seat belt. But the AI built-in reminds her to wear the belt with an annoying sound. To silence it, she will buckle the seat belt, but not secure herself.  Sad!

The third rasa is Karuna, which means "compassion" or "sorrow." Karuna is used to evoke feelings of empathy, sadness, and sympathy. Kind-heartedness or compassion (karuna),

I like to call out my brother’s wife Uma here. She just took care of him as my mother would take care of me. My brother provided the food menu for each day, and she prepared them meticulously. Kudos to her!  Also, a shout out to my co-sister ‘Anu akka’ for providing the idli and dosa batter for 3 weeks for me to prepare the breakfast for my family, with less elbow grease.

The fourth rasa is Raudra, which means "anger" or "rage." Raudra is used to convey feelings of aggression, frustration, and intensity. One thing all will be mad at is the Traffic in Chennai. You need to keep a buffer of 45 to 60 mins any time you are traveling. Else you will be late for your appointments. Understand the Govt must work on all these infrastructures, but there is no traffic rule/regulation. E.g., if you are turning, you stop, look, and then turn when safe. But there you honk, and you have the right of way!

The fifth rasa is Veera, which means "valor" or "heroism." Veera is used to convey a sense of bravery, courage, and strength. Want to highlight my dad, with 1 eye affected with Glaucoma and hearing deficiency came out with us on a trip to Hyderabad and Shridi. I was more worried about dropping him back, home safe and sound after the trip. He does not want us to walk beside him and guide him with the steps. He wanted me to walk in front of him. Based on the way I walk climbing up/down steps - he will follow. I believe he learned this art, as he was aging…. With his hearing deficiency, he will never say ‘I did not hear it’, he will say ‘I cannot understand it’ - so I had to repeat what I was trying to convey. Senior citizen personality - yes need to learn it, I know I will be there very soon!

The sixth rasa is Bhayanaka, which means "fear" or "terror." Bhayanaka is used to evoke feelings of anxiety, terror, and horror. What is more fearful, than your kid getting sick during 2 weeks of his vacation? My son left the US with stomach pain and consulted the doctor here in the US, Came with off-the-counter medicine. But the pain was so acute - we ended up doing an endoscopy for him there. The doctor in India – a GI specialist was 82 yrs old. On just pressing my son’s tummy asked for Endoscopy. My son was jumping up and down, without any prior lab test or examination, and he was asking for Endoscopy. But finally, he agreed and nothing serious. Everything was normal, except for some Bacterial infection. Prescribed a course of medicine for a week. But Hari being Hari took it for 1 day only. But later he was asked to complete the same course of medicines, when he came back to the US, by the doctors here. The GI doctor shared a tip, most of the GI issues are due to - hurry/worry and hot curry.

The seventh rasa is Bibhatsa, which means "disgust" or "revulsion." Bibhatsa is used to convey feelings of aversion, nausea, and repulsion. Who does not like to eat delicious, appetizing food? I had a great aversion to food whenever I travel to India. This started with the 2018 trip. That is a sign of aging too…  But as Michelle Obama in her book ‘The light we carry’ say - Balance is needed for Health. She did not qualify the health with mental, physical, or emotional bcos she knew that this statement applies to all 3. People who I met in my close circle - I just shared only 1 mantra ‘Eat Less’. Sometimes if my family went out without me, I text them ‘Eat Less’. Yes, less is more. Once in a day, you can have a perfect meal, but not all 3 times in a day - BF, lunch, and dinner. I asked them to take 1 meal light - replace one of the meals in a day with Fruits. There is a good advantage when you eat fruits - no need to cook them. Not sure how many of them would listen, will just request out of 21 meals in a week, pls have fruit at least one time. And sometimes people eat more and have immediate medicine to rectify - just like a journal entry. Eat one extra Gulab jamoon, and increase the insulin dosage that day…. Pathetic.

The eighth rasa is Adbhuta, which means "wonder" or "amazement." Adbhuta is used to evoke feelings of awe, surprise, and fascination. What fascinated me was the sibling rivalry and hidden love. I know we all will agree to it… Best do not get in between siblings - morning they will quarrel and the same day evening they will party… Brothers and sisters are each other’s superheroes with super-healing powers; consider yourself lucky to have them

I found Chennai a little greener than what I saw 15/20 years back. Yes, there is a lot of vegetation everywhere, believe this is supported by the Government too. I see a lot of people growing plants in their limited space and pots available to them. Urban trees /plants are city coolers! Great Going in becoming more Greener – which will help in offsetting global warming effect.

The ninth and final rasa is Shanta, which means "peace" or "tranquility." Shanta is used to convey a sense of calmness, serenity, and relaxation. What else can give us peace, than visiting our Family Deity and the temple of our favorite god (Ishta Devata). This was the only goal for our India visit. With all the blessings from above, it went well. Since my wedding, I had visited my In-laws' side family Deity many times, but my husband and my kids had never been to my dad’s side Family Deity. Planned it and fulfilled it too. Thinking of the visits to these temples gives a lot of peace and calmness to our souls. Also, I shave my head for religious reasons.

Navarasa is a rich and complex concept that plays a key role in Indian art and culture. The nine rasas - Shringara, Hasya, Karuna, Raudra, Veera, Bhayanaka, Bibhatsa, Adbhuta, and Shanta - are used to convey a wide range of emotions and moods in different artistic contexts. Will cherish these super, sweet, and soft moments, until my next visit to my motherland!

Presentation to Senior Leadership Team.

Have you reached a point in your career where you are required to present to senior executives/Leadership in your company? If you said 'Yes' to that 'Congratulation', it is awesome.

Of course, It is a great honor, however, it is a little stressful – because LT

  • They are a difficult set of audiences.
  • Impatient because of their hectic schedules
  • Not prepared for long presentations

So, we need to avoid mundane presentations. They want.

  • to get to the point right away
  • want to interrupt you with their questions.

You need to be ready and uber-prepared to answer them all.

Let me share my tips and tricks to retain their attention and make them consider what you want to share.

Know your material inside and out: you need to know the scripts cold - but do not memorize them. You should not have any uncertainty about the material you are going to present.

Grab their attention: This is known as the hook. How to grab their attention?

  • Tell a short relatable story – talk about the challenge you had and how you overcame it related to the topic.
  • Ask the rhetorical question ‘How do we increase the Campus Recruit’s Utilization from 0% to 75% within less than 6 months?
  • Share a shocking statistic OR start with a Quote/image.

Understand your audience: You need to know your audience when delivering any presentation. But when presenting to Senior Leadership, you need to organize their thoughts to make it easy for them to understand your proposal. They are always forward-thinking and result oriented. For this, you need to understand their mindset, motivation, and accountability. What are the details they need – obviously the hot buttons which are Linked to Corporative Objectives. First and foremost are money (Budget /Profit), ROI, Productivity, and Utilization - related to Efficiency. So, they can understand your request easily. This is a key point.

Use time wisely: Executives have very limited time so not a second to be wasted. Get to the point quickly and summarize always with the end in mind. They need to know what your call to action is, and what your solution is. Just use less than half of the time given for meeting in your presentations. Save the balance for Q&A. Drive the key message.

Be ready for the questions: Your presentation is not a monologue. It needs to be highly interactive. Executives with abundant business acumen will love to ask insightful questions. These are the sections that will make you shine and show how prepared you are. You will get questions that may be random, highly detailed/intense. They wanted to know anything and everything about your proposal - which will help them with their decision-making. They ask questions with current and future context. They want to know what your recommendations or tips are for those scenarios.

Summary slides: Use the 10% formula. If you plan to Share 30 slides. Have 3 summary slides. Prepare slides that say a lot.... fewer words. Slides should speak headlines. Headlines immediately draw attention to your key points. If they drill down and ask questions, then you can jump into your detailed slides. They want to see data in a compelling format so they can easily comprehend it. They should be able to take away your big idea in just 3 points.

Manage your nerves and be flexible: you are going to get nervous. Give enough time to prepare. Rehearse Rehearse Rehearse. Do enough research and check what they know, and what they need to know about your proposal. The more you know and understand them, the more effective and persuasive your presentation will be. Do a practice presentation with your manager or friend. Get feedback and correct yourself as needed.

Points to remember.

1. Position yourself as a leader - Speak to make an Impact - Do not speak to impress.

2. Do not take things personally - LT is not concerned about you as a person, they are concerned about the business.

3. Answer their questions assertively and to the point.

4. Giving the presentation to leadership elevates our career and LT will become strong promoters for your ideas.

5. Talk with Clarity, Confidence, and conviction - Do not use jargon/Abbreviations - do not ramble.

6. Do not makeup stuff - you are ok to say ‘I do not know - will check and come back after the meeting’ But remember to get back.

7. Do not present any problem without solutions. Executives want you to share the solutions and not just present challenges.

8. Look at the camera – with post-COVID, virtual meetings are here to stay. Have a good background. Look and dress well. Have enough lighting, a good microphone, and a Web camera.

9. It is common for the executive to ask you to go back and forth in your Presentation. Be Flexible. Cover what they want to focus on. The objective is not to go through all your slides, but the LT to understand the challenge and resolution you are trying to provide.

10. Do not forget your ‘ASK’ and get their buy-in from them and build trust and familiarity.

Recently had the opportunity to have a meeting with my company’s LT regarding – Campus Recruits Cost Holiday. Was able to use these tips and get the buy-in from them, and I am on the verge of implementing it.

Thank you and Good Luck!

Cost Holiday

When we do any shopping what is it that we all are looking for?

As a buyer, we look for good quality at negotiable prices.

As a salesperson - he/she will look to maximize the profit margin.

In both situations, in one word both are looking for ‘better value for their money spent.’

And as a buyer, we are more attracted to FREE! FREE! Or any offers like buy 1 get 1 free… Etc etc.

Trying to capitalize on this strategy when trying to place our Campus hires on projects. Give free samples to attract and then budge them to BUY! A cost Holiday is a kind of discount given for 6 weeks of Free Service and a Fee from the 7th week.

As we all know our Campus Hires come with very minimal or zero work experience. They would have got some 2 to 4 months ‘Internship’ experience. But they come with big aspirations - as an Ops I want to tap that and generate Revenue for the Org/Company. There is a lot of give and take to make this happen. These Campus hires want to work in cutting-edge technology. But the project will be on a different skill set. We need to convince our Campus recruits to learn and deliver on the Job.

We need to target the Sellers/Pursuit Team and make them aware of and know about this. So, when they work on large deals or long-tenured Projects, they will bake in our Campus hires in their Deal Estimate Models.

As soon as they are onboard, give 2 months of ramp-up time to learn the culture/systems/ tools of the company and then introduce to the client for free service for 6 weeks and then make them billable from the 7th week.

I spilt this project into 3 tasks.

  1. Scoping the deal Estimate with Aspires by giving Discounts.
  2. Learn on the Job
  3. Attach Price Tag

In the first step - when working on the Deal Estimate, identify the roles where we can place our Campus Recruits, let the client know of the ‘OFFER’, and sell it. Have any tools updated to accommodate this role.

2nd Step – ‘Learn on the Job’. The campus hires are placed in a team of size 6 or more. Also, they do get buddy mentors in the project.

Last is attach the price tag.

Let us dive deep into each of the TASK.

  1. Scoping the deal Estimate with Aspires by giving Discounts.

 i) During the Deal discussion, make the Campus Hires or Aspire known to the Client with the Offer that we provide.

ii) As it is a free service for 6 weeks, check any compliance or local labor laws.

iii) Can have a client interaction clinic for them.

iv) Have a Repository of all the Campus hire Profiles.

v) When signed off successfully - PJM can work with the Resource manager and assign them to the projects.

2. Learn on the Job

 i) Our Campus hires are like sponges, they are hired after multiple iterations of evaluation. They can learn and deliver any skillsets. Just check only 2 aspects Large Team and Long Term.

ii)  2 main considerations when assigning to Projects.

1.     Long Term - 4 months +. As we have 6 weeks free and then only, they try to contribute towards the project. If it is short-term, they will be released by the time they start making an impact. Also, then only we will be able to break even the profit margin too!

2.     Team Size 6+ - With this model his /her interaction with the client will be reduced and can learn from all other Team members, including the buddy mentor.

iii) We need to assign 2 mentors for them, 1 in the Project Buddy mentor and 2 outside of the projects. This will help to brainstorm and learn more.

iv) Pre-COVID the Campus Hire learned by shadowing a buddy mentor over the shoulder at the same client site. With most of the work done virtually, it is difficult, but we need to make it happen.

3. Attach Price Tag

i) When the campus hire starts delivering value - make him/ her billable.

ii) Track the 6-week free service with any existing/new tool.

iii) In case the client is NOT willing to pay – immediately deallocate from the current project.

This is one of the successful initiatives in most consulting firms. If you have any questions on this initiative, pls reach out to me!
